We have been very lucky recently and sighted another whaleshark on our weekly Sail Rock trip. After two already phenomenal dives at Sail Rock, we sailed to Southwest Pinnacle. We joked that only a whaleshark could make this day even better. A bit dazed from the naps on our sun deck, we jumped in and sure enough, there it was, a beautiful 5 meter long specimen hanging out at the buoy line. We hung back and watched it swim into the blue. It was very relaxed and on several occasions turned to face us.
Because we had briefed every diver on correct whaleshark etiquette, we were able to do a 40 minute dive admiring this majestic creature.
Whaleshark video
Emma, our videographer, got some great photos and video of this whaleshark. We even submitted it to www.whaleshark.org and discovered that it had not been previously identified. It is now officially known as T-202 in their database and among Sairee Cottage instructors and divemasters! We will be notified every time this particular whaleshark is sighted again! Maybe we look into giving him or her a better name in the future. Our submission is going to provide vital data to scientists who study these animals. Another great day on the Sairee Cottage dive boat.
Another hard day at the office for us divemaster crew. I think tonight we will have to have a beer and reflect on how we can justify calling this work. Don’t be too jealous however, you can become a PADI Divemaster too! If working as a divemaster sounds like your kind of job, you can get all the professional scuba diving training at Sairee Cottage Diving.
