Divemaster Course Snorkel Test – The Ultimate Challenge

Completing your PADI Divemaster course here at Sairee Cottage Diving in Koh Tao, Thailand, is the first step into the exhilarating and rewarding world of being a dive professional. Think about it, you get paid to dive! People give you money to do something that you love. As a dive master You get to spend your working day in that amazing underwater world.

And never has a vocational training course been so much fun. You get to spend over a month learning more about scuba diving than you thought possible. Helping instructors introduce new people to this sport we love and create new divers. In your divemaster course, you learn how to look after yourself and others underwater and navigate yourself around dive sites with ease. And here at Sairee Cottage Diving you get to live with all of your fellow dive master trainees (should you choose to do so) for FREE! It really does create a great environment and makes friends for life.

But it isn’t without its challenges. It wouldn’t be worth it if it was easy would it? And the final challenge is the one that everyone looks forward to – maybe with a hint of trepidation mixed in with the excitement! The Snorkel Test!

For those that don’t know, this is the unofficial climax to your divemaster course. It’s not a requirement, and it is definitely not in PADI’s standards, but it is a lot of fun and a great way to round off your achievements and get the celebration party started.

The Snorkel Test – Celebrating your achievements

So what is it? Well, anybody who has ever been to Thailand knows about the buckets you can buy your alcohol in. All the snorkel test is, is the challenge of drinking one of these buckets while wearing a mask and snorkel, with the drink being poured down the snorkel in one go. The entertainment factor can be increased for the audience (usually by increasing the embarrassment factor for the participants) with the addition of extra games, challenges or quizzes, and the difficulty factor can be increased with the addition of certain extra flavourings in the bucket (Tabasco sauce, eggs, milk to name a few).

Here at Sairee Cottage Diving 8 DMTs have completed their divemaster course so far this month, and as you can see from the photographs each and every one of them has taken to their Snorkel Test with enthusiasm and aplomb. Everyone completed the challenge, and most went on to celebrate their accomplishments well into the night.

On behalf of myself and my fellow DMT Mentor Jessie Griffin, and the rest of the Sairee Cottage Diving staff, I would like to congratulate (in no particular order) Simon Gayner, Rebecca Hjorth, Alex Christrup, Chris Moisson, Paul Shields, Felicia Siefert, Rasmus Pedersen and Andrea Zimmerman on becoming PADI Divemasters!

All have been a pleasure to teach and I am sure will go on to make excellent Dive Masters or Instructors.
